Now that summer has arrived, there are a few things to be monitor in order to keep your pond from becoming a hot, unhealthy mess.
Plants will keep the pond temperature down and provide necessary shade for the fish. A good rule of thumb is to provide coverage of approximately 50% of the pond's surface. One thing you probably didn’t know is that fish can get sunburned. So be mindful of inadequate coverage if your pond’s shallow.
Circulation should be constant. Adding an aerator will provide additional oxygen. Keep in mind that waterfalls, and even fountains play a huge part in the oxygenating the pond. Keep everything running 24/7.
Don’t overfeed your fish. Feed only once a day and only what they can consume in 5 minutes. If water temperatures reach 85 and above, discontinue feeding. Fish can’t metabolize at temperatures that high.
Use these tips to help keep your pond healthy in the heat. The bottom line is - let your fish and plants do the talking. They’ll tell you if something’s wrong. I’m Joe from webbsonline.
