HOW TO LOCATE A POND LEAK
While some water loss in your pond is normal through evaporation and sometimes splashing, significant loss is a problem. The first step in fixing a leak is finding the leak. So, if your pond is losing water, there are a few steps to take.
First step is to turn off the pump. If the water level continues to drop then we can eliminate that the pump is physically pushing it out and that the leaking is from the pond itself.
Go ahead and leave the pump off, let the water level drop until it stops. If the level starts to reach a dangerous level, remove the fish and plants and relocate them to a temporary holding tank. Once it stops, closely inspect the liner along that water level to find the source.
Going back to the first step- If the water level remained the same with the pump off, we can contribute the leak to the pump physically pushing it out. First, inspect all plumbing- tubing and fittings. Next, your waterfall. Repositioned stones and liner is generally the culprit. Check the perimeter for wet spots from splashing.
4. Once you’ve found the source of the leak we can then make repairs. If it was just a displaced liner, move everything back into place. If a hole was found in the liner, you can patch using our repair kits and tape.
