TOP 5 TIPS FOR MAINTAINING A CLEAN POND
As a pond owner or prospective - the importance of a healthy clean ecosystem is huge. Follow these 5 steps to help maintaining a clean pond.

1. Maintain fish population
If you have more than 10” of fish for every 100 gallons of water, your pond is likely over-stocked. Excessive fish waste can cause water quality and clarity issues. If you're overstocked, consider finding some of them a new home.

2. Don't over-feed your fish
When feeding, only feed them whatever they can eat in 5 minutes, once a day – no more. Overfeeding ultimately leads to more fish waste and generally uneaten food. Which adds to the overall organic load – which is not a good thing.

3. Add more plants
By summer, you should have around 50% plant coverage. This is not only for shade and oxygen, but plants absorb nitrates from fish waste, expediting that nitrogen cycle.

4. Clean out debris before it decays
Decaying debris, combined with fish waste and uneaten fish food will not only cause clarity issues but quality issues as well. Clean out your pond and filters, and add beneficial bacteria throughout the season.

5. Choose proper filtration
Your filter should match the size of your pond and fish load. Most manufacturers rate their filters based on optimal circumstances so I would always recommend up-sizing your filter.
