Clarity rarely disappears overnight. It slips. The water that looked crisp in spring picks up a green cast, or a haze that never quite settles, and because it happened gradually, nothing seems obviously wrong. The pump is running, the filter appears fine, and the UV still glows. That is why cloudy water is the most common call our Pond Techs take in late summer, and why the first answer is almost never a product. It is a diagnosis. Clarity is the output of four systems working together: your UV, your filtration, your flow, and the organic load the pond carries. When the water goes cloudy, one of those four has slipped, and the water will tell you which one if you know how to read it.

Start By Naming The Kind Of Cloudy

Before checking anything, look at the color, because different kinds of cloudy point to different systems. Green water is suspended single-cell algae, and it points to your UV system or to the nutrients feeding the bloom. A gray or brown haze is suspended solids, fine particles the filter is not catching, and it points to mechanical filtration or flow. Tea-colored water that is otherwise clear is dissolved organics, usually from leaves and debris breaking down, and it points to organic load. Fixing the wrong system wastes weeks. A tea-colored pond does not need a new UV bulb, and a green pond will not clear because you rinsed a filter pad. Name the color first and you have already narrowed the problem to one or two checks.

Check One: Is Your UV Actually Working?

If the water is green, start here, because this is the most common cause and the cheapest fix. A UV bulb is not a standard light bulb. Its germicidal output degrades steadily with run time while the lamp keeps looking perfectly normal, and on a pond running continuously, useful output lasts roughly one season. If you have not replaced the bulb since last spring, you have a lamp that lights and does not clarify, and green water is exactly what that looks like.

While you have the unit open, pull the quartz sleeve that surrounds the bulb and look at it. Scale and biofilm build up on that sleeve the same way they build on a glass shower door, and a coated sleeve blocks output even with a brand new bulb inside. Clean it gently and it goes back to work. Last, think about flow through the unit. Water has to spend enough time in contact with the lamp for the light to do its job, so a pump pushing water through the clarifier faster than the unit is rated for will leave the water green even when everything inside is new. If your UV is undersized for your pump or your pond, no bulb change fixes that.

Check Two: Is Your Filter Removing Solids Or Recirculating Them?

A hazy pond with suspended particles points at mechanical filtration. Filter media does two jobs and loses them in a predictable order. Mechanical pads catch solids. Biological media hosts the nitrifying bacteria that process fish waste. When a mechanical pad loads up, water stops passing through it and starts going around it. That is bypass, and it means the pad is technically in place while doing almost nothing. The solids it should have caught stay suspended in the water column or settle into the biological chamber and blind off the surface where your bacteria live, so you lose clarity and biological capacity at the same time.

Rinse mechanical pads regularly through the warm months, and more often after storms wash debris in. Rinse biological media in pond water only, never under a hose, because chlorinated tap water kills a meaningful share of the bacteria colony on contact. Replace any pad that stays compressed after rinsing. A pad that has lost its loft has lost the surface area that made it work, and no amount of rinsing brings that back.

Check Three: Is The Water Actually Moving?

Flow is the system that multiplies the other two. Your UV only treats the water that passes through it, and your filter only cleans the water that reaches it, so when flow drops, both quietly lose capacity even though nothing appears broken. The pond gives you an easy gauge: the waterfall. Compare the sheet coming over the spillway to what it looked like earlier in the season. Thinner sheet, or a weaker skimmer draw means flow has diminished.

Work the line in order. Clear the skimmer basket, clean the pump intake screen, then open the volute and inspect the impeller. Check the discharge line and any check valve assembly for debris. Restricted flow at the peak of the season means fewer turnovers through the filter, less contact time where it counts, and less oxygen transfer at the falls, all at the moment your pond needs the most of all three.

Check Four: How Much Are You Asking The Pond To Process?

Organic load is everything the pond has to break down: fish waste, uneaten food, leaves, blown-in debris, and the sludge layer building on the bottom. It is the slowest-moving of the four systems and the one that quietly feeds the other three problems. Every bit of decaying material releases nutrients, and nutrients are what algae blooms feed on. A pond can have a fresh UV bulb, clean pads, and strong flow, and still fight a losing battle against clarity because the load coming in exceeds what the system can process.

The levers are simple. Feed only what your fish finish in about five minutes. Net out leaves and debris before they sink and start breaking down. Treat with beneficial bacteria on a regular basis to keep the colony stocked. Warm water speeds up decay at the same time it stresses the colony, so through the hottest stretch of the season, regular bacteria additions are not an extra. They are the maintenance that keeps the whole system ahead of the load.

If you want to know how the pond is really doing rather than how it looks, test the water. Ammonia and nitrite readings tell you whether the biological side is keeping up, and a rising nitrate or phosphate trend tells you the nutrient pool feeding algae is growing. A five-minute test turns guessing into knowing.

Work The Checks In The Right Order

The color told you where to start. Green water: UV first, then flow, then load, because a tired bulb is the most common cause and the easiest fix, but a bloom that keeps returning even after a new bulb, is being fed by nutrients. Gray or brown haze: filtration first, then flow, because particles the pads should catch are either bypassing a packed pad or never reaching the filter at all. Tea-colored water: load first, because dissolved organics come from material breaking down in the pond, and no bulb or pad removes what has already dissolved. In every case, flow is the second check, because low flow degrades everything downstream of the pump.

Common Questions About Pond Clarity

Why is my pond still green when the UV clarifier is running?

Four usual reasons, in order of likelihood: the bulb is past its useful life even though it still lights, the quartz sleeve is coated and blocking output, water is moving through the unit faster than it is rated to treat, or the unit is undersized for the pond. Work through them in that order before assuming the clarifier itself has failed.

How long does it take for water to clear after replacing a UV bulb?

Every pond is different, but with a clean sleeve, proper flow and shade, expect visible improvement within several days and full clarity in one to two weeks. If nothing changes after two weeks, the problem is flow, sizing, or nutrients, not the bulb.

Will a clarifier treatment fix cloudy water permanently?

Flocculant clarifiers clump fine particles together so your mechanical filter can catch them. They are a useful assist, but they treat the symptom. If the pads are bypassing or the flow is down, the haze comes back. Fix the system, then use the treatment to speed up the recovery.

Does topping off with tap water affect clarity?

Partially, yes. Water changes or topping off enough to overflow will dilute the system and improve the clarity. Always add a dechlorinator when topping off with tap water.
