The Gift of Hard Work
The Webb’s story starts with early mornings at a roadside vegetable stand in Hartford County, Maryland. It was the1970s, and even as a young teenager, our co-founder and President Kevin Webb had an entrepreneurial spirit and drive for a hard day’s work. He obtained a huckster’s license at age 14 to sell corn out of the back of a pickup truck with his Dad, Joe.
After some success with produce, selling plants seemed like a natural next step to grow the business. Parents Joe and Linda opened Webb’s Farm and Garden Center in 1981 in Fallston, Maryland, and Kevin wasted no time pitching in with the new business.
Growing to Meet Customer Demands
In what would become a core value of Webb’s as a business, Kevin observed a need in his customers and saw it as an opportunity to provide more impactful services. At 19 years old, Kevin began his own landscape contracting business out of the garden center. He planted greenery, installed patios, garden beds, and much more, including meeting the newly popular demand for backyard ponds and water gardens. The days were long and the work was intense, but Kevin discovered that he had a passion for helping customers and providing them the joy of their very own water garden.
The look on our customers’ faces when they saw their waterfall running for the first time made all of the hard work worthwhile.
A Growing Interest in Water Gardens
As water gardens grew in popularity throughout the 1980s, it became clear Webb’s needed a wider variety of pond supplies to continue to provide a superior installation experience. Plus, customers needed a reliable source for supplies to grow and maintain their new ponds. In 1988, Webb’s created their first in-store pond display, featuring two popular koi fish named Zeus & Apollo.
A Whole-Family Affair
From the very beginning, Webb’s has been a whole family business. As Kevin started a family of his own, he followed in the footsteps of his co-owner parents Joe and Linda. Wife, Maura Webb, worked part-time at the store while attending college, as well as in the evenings and summers while she taught kindergarten at a local school. Maura’s brothers Tom and Matt also worked at Webb’s during the 1980s. Once children Ashley and Mike came along in the early 1990s, they of course got involved, too. Whether tagging along to a landscaping job site, lending a hand in the retail store, or greeting customers, the Webb’s kids learned the value of hard work and the dedication it took to run a small business early.
A Christmas Tradition Leads to a New World Online
Christmas season was always a special time at Webb’s Farm and Garden Center, with decorations and lights decorating the store’s interior and beautiful real trees lining the exterior. Customers loved taking in the festive sights each year, especially the carefully designed in-store displays and wide selection of freshly cut Christmas trees.
In 1996, the store had several leftover nutcracker decorations after the holiday season. A computer savvy employee named Eric suggested putting the nutcrackers up on a brand new online marketplace—eBay. After the first few online sales were a success, a website for Webb’s came shortly thereafter in 1997, on the cutting edge of the dot com era.
Pond and Water Garden Experts
Also in 1996, Webb’s moved to a new retail location that opened many opportunities to show the business’s capabilities for designing and building ponds. The new location included several displays, including 10 aquatic plant ponds, 2 greenhouses and 4 display ponds—the largest at 5 feet deep and able to hold 13,000 gallons.
An early adopter of the e-commerce model, Webb’s conducted a hybrid business model into the new millennium with a mix of in-store and online sales. In addition to being able to serve local customers in Maryland, the online store opened Webb’s up to new customers all across the country. As more and more customers came to trust Webb’s for their pond and water garden needs, the business continued to grow due to employees’ superior knowledge of the products and a second-to-none customer experience.
A Bright Future Ahead
As online shopping became more common over the years, Webb’s became a fully e-commerce business by 2010. Since 2013, we’ve operated out of a 32,000 square foot warehouse, with a team dedicated to fulfilling orders efficiently and accurately. We have expert technicians to provide advice and a stellar customer service team to ensure your orders meet the mark every time. Third-generation ponders Ashley and Mike are also both involved full-time with the family business.
